Please help us to name our new easy to make peasant dress pattern for girls. Leave the comment below to have a chance to win the pattern. This sewing pattern for children will be published soon on our website http://5berriessewingpatterns.com/ .
Features: Curved bodice lines and flared skirt add a new twist on the traditional peasant dress. The pattern is specially designed with busy moms in mind to help them save time while sewing, but also to create a simple dress that is comfortable and easy to wear. The dress has an elasticized neckline and the bottom of ¾ sleeves. Also features an optional elastic waistband. This pattern is suitable for woven and knit fabrics.
Fabric recommendations: Use quilting cotton or poplin for warmer weather, or corduroy or lightweight denim for cooler weather.
Combine two fabrics to make a visual statement with the contrast, or use just one fabric to achieve a more subtle “boutique” look. For the best combinations use contrast solid or print fabrics.
Note: The ¾ sleeves dress was made from Michael Miller quilting fabric.
Please help us to name this sewing pattern for girls and decide what picture will be the front picture of the PDF sewing pattern.
We will choose 3 winners from the comments below who will have this pattern for free. The results will be published on Wednesday, April 23,2014
Flower and Bow Appliqué
Build a FLOWER PIECE using the diagram below. CUT 1
ONE BOW MEASUREMENTS. For TWO Bows, double the pieces.
i. Use the diagram provided above to draw the flower piece on your fabric.
ii. Finish the straight edge of the flower piece with a rolled hem or tight zig zag stitch. This edge will be the ruffled “petals” of the flower.
iii. Finish the curved edge of the flower piece with standard serger stitch. This is going to be the bottom or underside of the flower.
iv. Gather the bottom (curved) edge of the flower.
Place two gathering stitches along the curved edge.
Set your machine thread tension to “0” and the stitch length to the longest possible. Sew two parallel lines along the curved edge (place first stitch ¼” from the edge, second stitch ½” from the edge), leaving several inches of thread at the beginning and at the end of the seam. Do NOT backstitch.
Pull the bobbin threads to gather the flower. The gathered edge should be about 3” long. Tie off the threads and distribute the gathers evenly.
v. Starting from the narrow end, start wrapping the flower around itself. Be careful not to twist the fabric – the right side should always be facing away from you. Use a couple hand stitches periodically (about every three revolutions or wraps) to hold the bottom edges of the flower together. When you reach the end, secure the end to the flower with a few extra stitches.
i. Finish the long edges of the bow pieces with a rolled hem or tight zig zag.
ii. Fold one strip in half so the raw edges meet in the center, right sides out. Overlap the raw edges by ½”, then top stitch them in place. Repeat with the other strip.
iii. Place one bow piece on top of the other, at a slight angle to each other, with both of the raw edges on the underside. Secure the bows together with a few hand stitches. Slightly gather the bow while stitching.
iv. Attach the flower to the center of the bow with a few hand stitches.
